LifeBook Assignment #6 - Paint Over Collage

I finally managed to complete another assignment for LifeBook 2012.

Kind of amazing how I'm able to find a little time here and there since working full time and caring for a 3 year old tends to suck up a lot of my week, but I'm done.

I finished her, yay!

I'm no stranger to this technique, I actually purchased Tam's Collage Paint & Soul lesson from her Willowing network a couple months back. You can actually see some of the other ones I'd completed over here:

Paint Over Collage - My Art

I'm just glad I was able to finish another lesson. I actually skipped a couple lessons, partly from lack of time and partly because I wanted to keep up with the class, but when I have a spare moment or two I do intend to head backwards and finish the ones I missed.

With this piece, I had to re-do her clothes 3 times. I really wanted a green background, and her shirt was pink and her skirt was a purplish paper color. Well the pink really clashed and I hated it, so I colored her shirt purple...and oh no. Horrible. So I decided on blue, which kinda blended with the purple a little bit. The skirt I colored over with gray and then dragged some of the blue in to it. Once it dried I used copic markers to do the dots and lines for her clothes until I got her semi-presentable. Haha. Guess you could say I do the same with my clothes every morning until I can figure out an outfit that works for me. Alas, to be a girl!

Simple ATC and Twinkling H2o's

I didn't have a whole lot of time for art tonight, but thought I'd doodle on an ATC and see what came of it...well, here's what it ended up being. I had actually put a little traveling case together (which is really just a kids pencil carrier) and I grabbed it so I could play while my son watched some cartoons before bed.

I must say, I think I'm really in love with Twinkling H2O shimmering mist. This is the first time I really did anything with them, but the colors are so fun, and I love how they shimmer against the light. These may find their way into my purse more often as I'm on the go a lot when not at work.

I used a water pen which is really nice on the go and I can just clean it off with a baby wipe that I fold and also stick in there.

So far, I really like the outcome, think I'll be creating more original ATCs....or I guess it would be an ACEO since it's an original and not a print? I dunno, but they're fun. Definatly recommend grabbing some if you can. I bought mine online at JoAnns.com when they had a sale. :-)

Academy of Sciences, CA

A couple weeks ago hubby and I took Xavier to Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, CA.

I swung by and picked up my mom so she could join in and then met up with my best friend and her two kids. It was a fun outing and one I hope we can do in the near future.

I think Xavier's favorite exhibit was the little tide pool where he could touch star fish and the bug stomping exhibit. It's all video and you stomp on bugs. For the older kids, there is a game where you try to trap the bugs...

We had a lot of fun, hope you enjoy the pics and video. :-)

Still working on my other mixed - media piece, but until I can get to my paints I sketched out another image to play with.

Not sure if I want to have her eyes closed or open, but for now her eyes are closed. Might move her arms too, right now she looks a bit stiff and I want her to look more serene.

Gonna keep working on her, but here's a progress shot.

Never Look Back - Journal Page

This is the 1st page of my journal, a reminder to myself to quit looking in the past. (The Woulda's, Coulda's, & Shoulda's)

Created for Art Geeks, I lost the email so I don't remember if it's for week 1 or 2, but it's for the prompt "tell a story." I was already working on this page and had the layout down when I thought this fit the theme.

Not quite sure if I'm done with it. I really like how it currently looks, but I may add some doodling...

Quick Sketch

Just wanted to share a quick sketch I worked on tonight while my son watched cartoons. Not sure when I can color it, but hoping to have some time this weekend to finish her. :-)I sketched her on some watercolor paper I got from my grandmas art supplies. It doesn't feel like the 140lb paper I normally pick up, so if it's 300lb like how it feels it will be interesting to see if it warps. Think I will test it!

These are really bad cell phone pics, but I wanted to do a quick post to share what I've been up to. I started taking the "Lifebook" class, which is a year long course offered by Tam at her Willowing Ning site. The 1st assignment is to think about our positive qualities and create our Goddess, so here's mine. I'm almost done, so technically she's a work in progress, but I like how she's coming along. :-)

I will be sure to take better pictures to share when I'm done, but for now I'm beat and heading to bed. xoxo Leila

Etsy Convo Surprise...

I woke up to a fun Etsy convo a few weeks ago.

A potential buyer reached out to me to see if I had any of a specific pendant she liked, but smaller.

I didn't, but offered to try recreating a smaller version, which I emailed to her and am thrilled that she likes it! I believe it's an X-mas gift for her mom, so I waited to post about in case either of them read my site.

It's so fun wearing unique jewelry, I get so many comments, I just love it.

Normally I don't work so small for something so intricate because it is a tad difficult, but I LOVE how cute and pretty this one turned out. So I may be making more this size...which is about 1 1/2" to just under 2" in diameter (of the circle).

Have a looksie.... :-)

Journal Pages In Progress

Been super busy with a VERY active 3 year old, but wanted to quickly post a few journal pages I'm working on. Managed to get the below layouts down...next is text and doodling, yay!

It's funny, I was never super into journaling, but I changed up the style and I think I like this process a lot better. Don't know what it was about it before that didn't click for me, but watching this video and how she put her page together really helped me!

So here are my pages I'm working on....still in progress, but I'll post the finished pages as soon as I can! The main pieces are cut outs from a magazine, acrylic ink, and random borders from Etsy & Deviant Scrap digital art sellers.

Eden - Wacky Haired Lady

Tam over at her Willowing Ning site has been creating some pretty cool "Wacky Haired" ladies.

She posted her recent creations and invited us to join in on wacky haired lady fun!

With that said, yes, I had some fun with a wacky haired lady of my own.

I've been calling her Eden...Garden of Eden. Mostly because of the vines in the background and butterflies in her hair (if you can see them). My camera isn't downloading to my computer at the moment, so I had to take the picture using my phone, lol.
The whole time I created her the Garden of Eden was on my mind.

I love watching art videos on YouTube.

Last night I was relaxing to a few before heading to bed, and as I hopped around on YouTube I came across this artist and video:

I'd never used watercolor before, but as I watched her I felt that familiar desire to try something new, so I gave it a shot today.

When my grandmother passed, I was given many of her art supplies. So I found the watercolors I knew I had and attempted my own watercolor painting.

Nowhere near as good as her, still need to learn how to gain some control over the watercolor, but I still had fun watching the paint and water swirl around.

Our Trip to the Pumpkin Patch...

Before our week long vacation ended, we took little man to the pumpkin patch,

SO MUCH FUN.

We checked out Adobe Pumpkin Farm out in Petaluma, CA.

For a pumpkin patch, there's was pretty amazing...

Last year we went to one in Dixon, CA which was basically pumpkins and a corn maze.

Well not Adobe's Pumpkin Farm...

Just look at the pics....little man had so much fun there, we will certainly go again for years to come!

He loved the train ride, had fun climbing hay, petting animals, watching the hay rides, and picking out a pumpkin. Lots and lots of fun...and he was knocked out for the ride home, which made mommy and daddy very happy, hehe.

WIP & Another Feature...

I've been a busy little bee this weekend.

I've been whipping together some digital collage sheets to sell in my shop. So far I have about 20 that have all the backgrounds in place and I'm working on cleaning up images of other items, people, etc to complete the sheets. So watch for those if you work in digital!

The other thing I've been working on is a collage mixed media canvas.

Practice, practice, practice

Since my son would rather play his learning games on daddy's laptop than hang out with mommy, I had a little time to practice sketching. Here are a couple I did tonight using Adriana's tutorials from Doll Dreams.

Since I drew them in a 9x12 mix media 98lb drawing pad I need to decide how to color them.

I'm not sure if 98lb paper would hold wet media very well. Might have to give color pencils a shot...

We shall see how this goes, lol.

We met up with grandma and grandpa...had some fun hanging out at a local beach for about an hour....

Xavier loved it, he had so much fun throwing rocks into the ocean, and I enjoyed relaxing and watching the fun. :-)

Doll Face - Sweetened Simplicity

I've been doing the Sweetened Simplicity course provided by Shwe Khit over at her ning site.

It's a digital art course and she teaches us how to make amazing characters using simple basic tools in photoshop. You can see a snippet of it here on her youtube channel.

It's slightly different than the digital art course I took by Tam on her Willowing ning site.

As much as I've been having fun playing with paint and paper, my first love is digital.

I've done a number of digital collages which you can see here, but I've been wanting to "paint" in photoshop, and actually make something worth sharing.

Now with the 2 self study courses under my belt I have no excuse...

So...here is what I've created so far, and mind you, I JUST started (been SUPER busy with the new job working 10+ hrs a day!).

I wanted to continue and actually finish her...but I promised little man we'd go to the beach, so I have to stop and head out, but I do plan to finish her, and of course, I will post the finished girl!

Made my own ink sprays!

Bet you're wondering what this is!

Would you believe me if I told you it's my new master piece?

Yea....

I wouldn't either, lol.

Actually, it's a spray sampler...why? Because I didn't want to pay $5-$8 a bottle for new inks. Economic times are hard, maaaan, and I'm getting stingy with my money...

So I happened across a few youtube videos and learned to make my own.

I watched vid#1, vid#2, vid#3 and vid#4 - - -and realized it's surprisingly easy. Whodathunk?!

I hit up Micheals for spray bottles, but they only had 4...so I ran over to Target on the off chance that they might have some spray bottles...which they did, so I bought 15 more.

Next I grabbed a random mix of acrylic colors, metallic colors, and glitter colors that I already had and then dumped each one into the bottle, filled just under a quarter of the way. Put a little glue in...don't know if I really need to, but it seemed like that's what some people do so the paint will stay put, and then filled with water leaving some room to shake.

Then I shaked the hell out of them so everything would mix, and then I sprayed my paper to see how the paint would look. Everything looks really cool with the exception of the 2 glitter ones I did. I wasn't surprised though since I got the same result the girl in the video got, but we'll see, I may use in my art journal for a little glitter here and there...cuz you know I love glitter!!

Now for about $20 I have 19 different sprays...if you did the math, at $5 a new bottle that would be $100 or more, right??? Yeah, I saved some money, I have fun bright colors that I can use in my art journal, and I don't have to be stingy with the color because I didn't pay $5+ or more for it.

I kept myself pretty busy this weekend making a variety of dainty necklaces....

I showed 4 new pendants the other day, but here's a better picture of all of them...I made around 20, I think, kinda lost count once I got into the groove of making them. :-)

A nice variety of style and color that I'll be adding to my shop over this next week.

I also started another paint over collage.

This is how it started...I'm a little further along and hope to have it finished by the end of the week, and of course, I will upload a pic to share. :-)

New pendant - Peas in a Pod

I've seen a number of "Peas in a Pod" necklaces being sold on Etsy, but the ones I've seen have seemed so tiny to me and I tend to like pendants that are noticeable from a distance, so when I came across these frames and cute little peas I thought up a fun way to "display" them.

I really love Swarovski beads, I just love how they can "pop" and sparkle, so I instantly reached for these kind of beads as I got my materials together.

I hit up the DVR que and started wire wrapping and voila!

Very cute, sparkly "Peas in a pod."

I'm so bummed I grabbed 2 pods...I'm thinking I may have to take another quick road trip to grab some more so I can do other colors. :-)

Well, I finally had time to finish one. :-)

How do you like her?

She's me...when my hair goes crazy, haha.

I've had babies on the brain lately, especially each weekend as I wake up and realize Xavier is in my bed again (I cannot get this little boy to stay sleeping in his bed...but truthfully, I really don't mind cuddling up next to him). Every chance I get I watch him sleep and realize he's growing up way too fast. He'll be 3 in October! Where has the time flown by.... So thoughts of another one have been creeping in to my head, not sure when the next one will happen, but for now I've created my memory of being pregnant with my little man.

I was talking to a friend of mine and we were discussing the last jobs we worked at. After talking to her I reflected on my 4 years there as well as the start of my new job - comparing the 2.

This journal page basically sums up how I feel.

As much as I'll miss my old co-workers, I am so glad I'm free of the drama, stress, and frustration of what became the "norm" there...

It's done.

I quit.

My stress at the moment is gone.

Hopefully forever.

WIP - Collaged Mixed Media Girls

I've been a busy bee this weekend. Worked on 6 backgrounds, 5 x 7 in size, flat canvas board. Previously I was working on watercolor paper, but the warping bugs me, so I moved to canvas board to see how they'd turn out.

Same technique I've been learning on Tam's Collage, Paint, & Soul course over at her Willowing network. I've been modifying how I work for what works for me, but I still use her basic concept to achieve the results I like.

I really love how the backgrounds turned out, you can't see the details, but I used crackle paint on all 6 in various corners. Looks pretty cool in person.

The last image are the girls I'm working on....just wanted to share the in progress work I've been doing since I haven't posted in a little while. I was wanting to get all 6 done, completed, and in my shop this weekend, but alas, it's been a crazy weekend with trying to potty train the little one, fit in errands, and battling holiday traffic.

On the plus side, hubby, little man, and I got to see a drive-in movie. Never done that before, so that was a pretty cool experience - the only down side is the screen looked a tad blurry...that or my vision really sucks (which technically it does since I wear glasses to see distance, boo!). X being 2 1/2 didn't really grasp the concept of sitting still and watching a movie (he usually tears up the house while we watch a show, his toys and books will be all over the room, but it seems to be his happy chaos...that he has to clean before bed, lol), but that's ok since it didn't start until 9:30p so 30 min into it he was knocked out. He sure did love the popcorn tho! haha!!

Anywho....a warm welcome to all the new followers and a big HOWDY to those already following. I hope wherever you are you are managing to stay cool and enjoying the holiday!

I signed up for her Digital Dreams course as well, but now I'm torn between starting up a third collage or catching up in the newly started course.

Paint Over Collage - New Art

Tam over at her Willowing Ning site offers several super awesome courses.

I knew she was offering her Paint over Collage technique called Collage, Paint & Soul at 21 Secrets, but I didn't want to pay for all those courses with the limited time I have, so when I noticed she's now offering it separately on her site, well I jumped all over that!

(psssst....it's only $15!!!)

It's a self study course, which is fine with me because I can work on it as I have my own time. She offers 2 videos and I watched both of them immediately. I can't believe how easy she makes it look! ...and it really is super easy. I started my collage yesterday and I finished it today.

I'm quite happy with the first one I've completed and am just itching to get started on a new one...but I'll have to wait a couple days since tomorrow (6/15) is my BIRTHDAY and I don't expect to have much free time. ;-)

Dance Like No One is Watching - Flat Canvas Board

Continuing with the Silhouette series I started....

I actually really love love love how this one turned out.

Partly because I DO dance when no one is watching, hehe.

I look at this piece and I feel so free. I hope I captured her movement, I really wanted her to look like she was dancing to her own tune, ya know? That's how I strive to be, I'm me, no matter what anyone thinks of me, I just do me.

It's a mixed media piece where I used paper flowers, acrylic paint, ephemera pieces, and paper collage.

I am actually quite pleased with how it turned out and will be adding the original and a print version to my Artsy Creations shop in the coming weeks!

Well I'm off for a few days. I fly out tomorrow for my little brother's graduation. He's finished graduate school at Yale and he will officially be a lawyer come Monday 5/23/11. I am SO proud of him...and even more proud and excited for him that the day after his big day he flys down to L.A. to start his new job for a judge.

I can't wait to watch him blossom in his new career...and who knows, maybe one day he'll be the next president! Seriously. This young man is smart and talented....and shhhhh....he has the softest heart!

Been a little while since I've posted, but I haven't NOT been doing anything...

I actually signed up for another art course because I wanted to learn how Adriana Almanza created her dolls, and more specifically, the beautiful eyes! I enrolled in both her courses, Doll Dreams and Siren Dreams which you can check out on her Doll Dreams Ning site.

I just started practicing, but here are a few sketches so far:

Here's a journal page I just finished, it's part of a series I'm starting and I figured I'd work on it in my journal before moving it to canvas.

I really like how it turned out! I will definitely continue working this series.

How to Paint an Owl Class - Week 2 Progress photos

I worked on my owls this weekend.

This week it was sketching our owls and adding paint.

There was an interesting development as I painted.

I found out that color wash seeps through acrylic, something I did not know but will remember for future, lol.

I painted the first layer and after letting it dry, I tried again with the face.

No such luck, it leaked through again, although a little less. I don't mind it anymore, kinda adds a nice touch to his face. So I will leave it alone and see how it turns out.

Anyway, here are some photos of how they are now. Next week we work on eyes :-)

Pre-Preschool....and a feature!

Little man started pre-preschool today...It was quite the exciting day...for mommy and daddy. For little man, well, he hated it, LOL. Hopefully he'll adjust to not being glued to our hips here pretty soon and on to making new friends and learning more!

I can't wait!!

ps...he was happy the first 30 minutes...while we were there, but once we tried to leave, ohhh yeah, waterworks. He'll get used to it soon, I hope!

More Backgrounds

I worked on some more backgrounds this weekend.

I may or may not use them for the course I'm taking...

I actually am thinking of using them for something else I have in mind...but we'll see.

Here they are, I really like how they turned out:

I did these on watercolor paper in my journal. Used Acrylic inks and stencils...didn't use any colorwash this time. Just paint, paint daubers, and tiny ink pads.

Oh, I lied, I did use color wash, but really all I did was spray a layer of ink to alter the colors a little bit. The 1st one I really liked so I didn't spray anything on it. The 2nd one got some blue color wash spray towards the top (you can see the blue tint where it used to be white) and then at the bottom I did some green color wash. The 3rd one for whatever reason I felt compelled to spray some red color wash over it. Not sure if you can see it, but it added a cool spotty texture to it. :-)

In other news, hit up my local Micheals today and am quite pleased at my little score.

I got this:

I had been eyeballing it for quite some time...but just couldn't justify the $80 price tag so I passed it up each time...even with the 40% off coupons I get every week.

This week though I noticed they were doing a clearance to get rid of all these storage items and they had a 50% off tag for all the storage items.

Well, I got my favorite gal that I always chat it up with every time I see her working and asked her to check the price for me. Turns out it was supposed to be in the clearance section and not in the 50% off section...but she did the little gun thing to see what it was priced at. Turns out it was on clearance for $34.99....then she said since it was in the wrong spot, she'd give me 50% off...I thought she meant 50% off the normal sticker price of $80 (which didn't mathematically add up for me)....but NO! She meant 50% off the clearance price...so I got it, literally, for $17!!! I am so stoked!!! Ahahahaha....I immediatly came home and begged hubby to hang it for me, hehe...but since he was grumpy and waiting on his cousins so he could watch Wrestlemania (*major eye roll here*) I said ok, install tomorrow, pretty please?!

So yippee, it will hopefully be on my wall where I pointed tomorrow when I get home from work, LOL.

I suppose I could hang it myself, but I don't wanna.... *pulling out the feminine card here!*
That is why we get married right? I cook dinner, you do all that hard stuff I don't want to do. HAHA
We make up rules as we go, right ;-)

How to Paint an Owl Class - Week 1

I mentioned in my previous post that I've signed up for Juliette's How to Paint an Owl E-course.

Week 1 is working with backgrounds, here's what I've come up with.

I made some quick "canvases" by sizing and cutting down some cardboard, then sizing some watercolor paper which I adhered to the cardboard. I figured that would be a little cheaper that ruining a bunch of canvases and I wouldn't be so bummed if I ruined one...so here's how they initially started.

I messed up several times and just kept re-working them until I was happy with the final backgrounds:

I used stencils, acrylic paint, paint dabbers, and colorwash spray. :-)

So far so good...

My biggest frustration was the colorwash...the bottles they come in suck. Period. I can't tell you how many times drips of wash fell on to what I was working on. It was very annoying, but thankfully these backgrounds aren't meant to be perfect. I wanted them to be messy and creative, so I put my annoyance aside and kept working on my backgrounds and cleaning up the dripped wash - careful not to get any onto my carpet, cuz that would be bad.

One technique I had seen in a video prior to buying them was actually quite helpful. Instead of lifting the stencils and having the wash spread into a blob (which I did a few times until I remembered the technique), I finally grabbed a paper towel and dabbed at the wash before lifting the stencil. Made for a much nicer background that I've become pleased with.

I can't wait for week 2 when we start on owls...think I might whip out a sketchbook and try to think of fun characters.

My Artfilled Sunday...

I did a few things this Sunday...

Well, besides sleep that is!

I added texture to a journal page just for the heck of it.

Then painted it bubble gum pink...and now, I have no idea what to do with it, lol.

It will probably sit until I figure it out, or I'll just paint over it with another color.

Not sure yet, and no, I have no idea why I did that.

I had an overwhelming urge to clean my office...

Then after putting a couple things away, I got side tracked...and worked on some ATCs!

I've gone over her class supply list a gazillion times to make sure I really am ready...and yes, yes I am.

Now if only I could speed up time so it could be Monday already....

I started working on this journal page out of frustration with my job. Some days I just wish I could fly fly away from the stress and frustration that it is. (I blogged about it briefly here.) Since I can't do that at the moment, I zoned out when I got home and created this journal page.

I'm actually quite relieved that I finally have a journal I'm happy to work in. My moleskin was just too small for me and I found that after a few pages I just stopped bothering and went to digital. ...but I don't always want to do digital, I want to touch, feel, get messy and just create. So now that I have a bigger journal in the size I want that will lay FLAT and not flip close, well, I'm happy with that, so now I can do more. Hope you like this journal page. I should have more to upload soon enough!
